QURANIC SUPPLICATIONS

Duas for travel and journeys from the Quran

The Quran records words to say when setting off, boarding and arriving. The supplication for setting out on a journey reported in Sahih Muslim includes the verses of Surah Az-Zukhruf below.

Glory be to the One who has placed this at our service

Words for mounting a ride, remembering that everyone returns to their Lord. (Az-Zukhruf 43:13–14)

43:13Page 490 · Juz 25

That ye may mount upon their backs, and may remember your Lord's favour when ye mount thereon, and may say: Glorified be He Who hath subdued these unto us, and we were not capable (of subduing them);

From the Sunnah

These supplications were taught by the Prophet. Each shows a simple transliteration, the English meaning, the reference and the grading displayed on Sunnah.com, where you can read the Arabic. Learn the pronunciation from a teacher.

The travel dua: Allahu akbar three times, then Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha

Said on mounting your ride as you set out on a journey.

Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadhal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha, watwi 'anna bu'dah. Allahumma antas-sahibu fis-safari, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari, wa ka'abatil-manzari, wa su'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahl.

Allah is the Greatest (three times). Glory be to the One who has made this ride subservient to us, for we could not have managed it ourselves, and to our Lord we will surely return. O Allah, on this journey of ours we ask You for virtue and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, lighten this journey for us and make its distance easy for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the journey and the Guardian of our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, from gloomy sights, and from finding harm to our property and family on our return.

Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet said Allahu akbar three times and then these words; the opening words are Quran 43:13-14, shown in full above.

Dua when returning from a journey: Ayibuna ta'ibuna

Said on the way home: the Prophet repeated the travel dua when returning and added these words.

Ayibuna, ta'ibuna, 'abiduna, li Rabbina hamidun.

We are returning, repentant, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

This addition comes at the end of the same report as the travel dua.

Allahu akbar going up, Subhan Allah going down

Said along the way: Allahu akbar when climbing and Subhan Allah when descending.

Allahu akbar (going up). Subhan Allah (going down).

Allah is the Greatest. Glory be to Allah.

Jabir ibn Abdullah described this as the Companions' practice, and al-Bukhari placed it under the chapter on saying Subhan Allah when going down a valley. When stopping somewhere on a journey, Sahih Muslim 2708a teaches A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq, listed in the protection collection.

Saying goodbye to a traveller: Astawdi'ullaha dinak

Said when seeing off someone who is setting out on a journey.

Astawdi'ullaha dinaka wa amanataka wa khawatima 'amalik.

I entrust to Allah your religion, what you are responsible for, and your final deeds.

Ibn Umar said this was how the Prophet saw him off; Jami at-Tirmidhi 3443 records the same words with the grade Hasan (Darussalam).
